Black August tells the story of the brief life and controversial death of Black Panther and prison organizer George Jackson. The conditions of Jackson's incarceration brought to light issues surrounding race and the the prison system in the 1960s and '70s.

Set in the 1970's San Francisco Bay Area, SPY's Chris Martin approached the film color from a historical as well as aethetic perspective. Watching news reel footage of George Jackson and the events surrounding his life, Martin worked to emulate film stocks of the time period depcited in the film.

SPY's color breathed life into the film's art direction and wardrobe and helped the filmmaker capture the era that housed George Jackson's story.

Black August is directed by Samm Styles and stars Gary Dourdan.
